When I was a kid, I had lots of energy and no attention span. Naturally, sports were a great outlet, but it was not so easy finding the right fit for me. Sports are a great way to exercise, make friends, have fun and get competitive juices flowing. There are lots of options and at some point you may wonder which sport may be the best for you or your family. You may be asking yourself, which sport should I play? When deciding which sport to play, you should consider a couple factors:
1). Team vs Individual
Team Sports are a lot of fun because you have the opportunity to meet and work with other people. Basketball, soccer, baseball, football, hockey and volleyball are some examples of popular team sports in the US. On a team, individuals practice with each other on a weekly basis and compete against other teams in the same area. In a group, you will acquire teamwork and collaboration skills.
Other sports such as tennis, golf or swimming can be done individually. On your own, you will learn to be more independent and self-disciplined. There may be more pressure on the individual in this format, but it can personally rewarding.
2). Time of Year
When deciding which sport to play, you should consider the time of year or when you would like to play:
Most sports are played in a particular season. For example, ice hockey is usually played in the winter. Outdoor sports such as baseball and soccer may be better in the summer while the weather is still nice. An indoor sport such as basketball can be played year-round.
3). Where the Sport is Played
Is the sport played outside or inside? Is the playing destination easy for me to get to on a regular basis? Can I practice at home?
Most sports can be played outside. Football, soccer and baseball are traditionally played on fields as long as the whether permits. Sports like basketball can be played on outdoor courts, but organized leagues tend to use indoor gymnasiums. Hockey may require special ice rinks or facilities.
When deciding which sport to play, you should consider how easy it will be for you to access the playing locations.
4). Price
Some sports are more expensive then others. When determining which sport if best for you or your family, you may want to think about the following costs
Sports like hockey and football require additional padding and equipment. You also need to evaluate what equipment you need. Gloves, bats, clubs or rackets may be vital to the sport you want to play. However, you may not need to pay for something like a goal or hoop if you join a league where these parts are provided. Some parks or outdoor areas may have hoops or goals for free use.
For sports like golf, you may have to travel to find different courses. Some locations and clubs may charge additional fees or memberships.
5). Safety
Sports are meant to be fun and competitive, but safety should come first. Sports like football and hockey involve more physical contact. It is important to purchase the appropriate padding and equipment. When considering which sport for you and your family, consider which options may be the safest.
No matter where you live, what time of the year it may be, or how many people participate; there are plenty of great sports options to choose from. Sports are great ways to get kids more active and find fun new hobbies and friends.
